The weather has clearly turned and the warm weather is here to stay. The gardeners have gotten their mulch down and planted this year’s annuals. The anglers have started visiting their favorite spots, hoping to land some hungry big ones as spawning season makes them more active. Camp forms are filled out and vacation plans are made. The pool is warming up. The hiking trails are a great diversion. The kids’ travel baseball/softball seasons are well underway and demand much of your time. The tennis courts promise good-natured competition, and of course the golf courses look so inviting. This is the perfect time to ease back on your job searching, right?
Summer is not the time to give up your job search… leave that to your competition. This is actually the perfect time to ramp up your search.
Many job seekers think now is the time to put their search on hold, figuring that hiring will slow down because people tend to vacation with their families. That line of thinking is what you can take advantage of. While other job seekers are taking a break, you can be making new networking contacts who will help you get into your targeted companies.
You go right ahead and enjoy your summer barbeques, pool parties, golf outings, travel ball games etc. Just make sure you are actively looking to network while doing so. There’s a CEO at the party? Great! Go introduce yourself; ask some questions and make some suggestions. Capture his interest, and schedule a round of golf with him. That’s summer networking.
Between the socializing and games, you can work with a Career Strategist to make your “personal marketing collateral” contemporary and able to support your candidacy. The Strategists can help develop your general search strategy, résumés, interviewing skills, networking efforts, and what executives need the most help with but don’t even know it – creating a value proposition that truly fits you and what you’re all about.
ExecuNet’s Managing Director of Career Services, Don Weintraub, is a former recruiter and an expert in personal branding and marketing, networking, interviewing, and compensation negotiation. On July 7, he will be leading a Master Class on executive job search during the summer months. This is your opportunity to learn what to do and how to get ahead of your competition during the summer months. He can show you how to make the most of the opportunities summertime presents job seekers.

I strongly encourage all of you in search, or soon to be in search, to attend this class. As head of our Career Strategists, Don really has his finger on what’s working in today’s executive job market and is an amazing resource to have access to.
Hope to see you in class!
