One of the most frustrating experiences in an executive job search is submitting a resume and never hearing back.

According to executive recruiter Sharon Hulce, CEO of Employment Resource Group, Inc. (ERG), there are often reasons beyond your qualifications. Sometimes companies already have an internal candidate in mind. Other times, your resume simply isn’t giving recruiters what they’re looking for.

The biggest mistake? Focusing on responsibilities instead of results.

Many executives still write resumes that describe what they did rather than what they accomplished. Recruiters don’t want a job description. They want evidence of impact. Sharon advises executives to lead each role with a compelling achievement—something that immediately demonstrates how they “won the day, the month, or the year.”

Why does this matter? Because recruiters are busy. Most spend only seconds scanning a resume before deciding whether to keep reading. If the first bullet under a position isn’t compelling, the rest of the resume may never get reviewed.

Other common mistakes include overly long resumes, generic executive buzzwords, excessive design elements, and content that feels more like marketing copy than an authentic representation of the candidate. Sharon argues that clarity, credibility, and measurable results are far more powerful than inflated titles or flashy formatting.

She also emphasizes the importance of alignment. The strongest candidates understand their values, strengths, and work style—and communicate them clearly. Finding the right fit isn’t just about landing a job; it’s about finding an organization where you can thrive.
