“Should executives focus on the big job boards?”

It’s a question many senior leaders ask and one that came up during a recent ExecuNet Q&A with our Director of Coaching, Harriette Lowenthal.

While job boards can be useful tools for market research, helping you understand trends, roles, and company needs, they’re rarely the most effective path to landing an executive role. That said, if a position truly catches your attention, go ahead and apply — but do it strategically:

  • Apply directly on the company’s own site when possible.
  • Strengthen your odds by asking a contact in your network to alert HR to your application.

As Harriette explains, executives need more than just a résumé on a website. At the executive level, success requires a strategic approach built around a clear Value Story and a deliberate, targeted networking effort.
