Marketing yourself is not a good idea. You hire an attorney to represent you. You hire a barber to cut your hair. You hire a doctor to check you over and evaluate how you’re doing each year. Even the greatest athletes on the planet have agents to represent their business interests in contract negotiations.
The reason people hire others to attend to their interests in many different aspects of their lives comes down to education, experience, and most of all objectivity.
Even people in marketing as their career path should not market themselves when in a job search. They just won’t be as good at it as someone else. It is impossible to be objective about one’s own career and to have the deep, probing conversations to develop a Value Story without another trained person, a career coach.
Watch ExecuNet career strategist Judith Vance talk about this challenge in this excerpt from a Fresh Start Q&A session.
