One of the most common concerns executives raise during a job search sounds something like this:

“What if I don’t have any wins?”

It’s a question that came up during a recent conversation between ExecuNet’s Tony Vlahos and executive recruiter Sharon Hulce, CEO of Employment Resource Group, Inc. (ERG), and their answer was immediate: everyone has wins.

The challenge isn’t whether they exist. It’s whether you’re looking for them in the right places.

For many executives, accomplishments become so routine that they stop feeling noteworthy. A successful turnaround, a high-performing team, a difficult project delivered under pressure—these achievements often get dismissed as “just doing the job.” Yet these are exactly the kinds of results employers and recruiters want to hear about.

Sharon recommends a simple exercise to uncover the accomplishments that may be hiding in plain sight. Create two lists:

  1. What are you genuinely passionate about?
  2. What are you naturally good at, even without formal training?

The intersection of those two lists often reveals strengths, patterns, and accomplishments that define your value as a leader.

She points to athletes as a great example. Recruiters often value athletic backgrounds not because of the sport itself, but because sports develop traits that translate directly into professional success: competitiveness, resilience, discipline, and the ability to perform under pressure.

The same principle applies to executives. Your wins aren’t always financial metrics or major promotions. Sometimes they’re reflected in the teams you’ve built, the challenges you’ve overcome, the cultures you’ve improved, or the problems you’ve consistently solved.

And if you’re struggling to identify those accomplishments, Sharon offers a challenge: create them. Seek out opportunities that align with your strengths and passions. The experiences you create today become the stories you’ll tell tomorrow.

At the executive level, employers aren’t simply hiring experience. They’re hiring proven impact.

Being able to articulate your wins is a critical part of communicating your value story and positioning yourself for your next leadership opportunity.
