During a recent Q&A with ExecuNet’s Director of Coaching Harriette Lowenthal a member wrote in saying she’s “tempted to apply everywhere out of fear of missing an opportunity.” This scattershot application strategy – applying everywhere and hoping something sticks – is common for job seekers who don’t have an actual job search strategy.
It’s exhausting and rarely effective.
Harriette says that is an exhausting and time consuming way to approach a job search. Checking with your network to find a “backdoor” into opportunities that catch your attention is one way to increase your odds. You’ve also got to do a thorough soul searching into what you are actually looking for so that your applications are targeted on jobs that are a good fit for you and your career goals and not just something that’s open. When you apply with focus and purpose, you’ll spend less time chasing openings and more time connecting with the right ones.
