Most executives begin their job search before they have done the necessary soul searching to determine exactly what they want to do next and the strategy development for connecting with companies where they are relevant and want to be next.

Executive career coach Mark Brodsky explains that this kind of self-assessment and strategy development is difficult to do alone and is often more effective with guidance from a coach. Despite this, many executives default to familiar tactics—searching job boards and informing their network they are “looking.”

The ROI on those two actions is very low – for executives.

Job boards are the modern way to find work, yet for the executive tier, they represent the smallest piece of the puzzle. Research consistently shows that up to 85% of senior leadership roles are never even posted publicly. That doesn’t mean they don’t have their uses in a job search. But while job boards are a tool, they shouldn’t be your foundation. At this level, “applying” is rarely enough. Positioning is what wins. Leaders need to define where they add value, identify target organizations, and proactively align themselves with those opportunities—rather than relying on traditional methods.

If you’re starting (or struggling with) an executive job search, this video is worth watching—it will challenge your assumptions and help you focus on the strategy that actually drives results.
