A Cautious Hiring Market

In a recent conversation, ExecuNet’s Tony Vlahos sat down with executive recruiter Sharon Hulce, CEO of Employment Resource Group, Inc. (ERG), to discuss what’s really happening in today’s executive hiring market—and why many senior leaders are struggling to gain traction.

According to Sharon, employers are moving more cautiously than they have in years. Organizations are taking longer to define what they truly need, reevaluating roles in light of AI, and involving more stakeholders in hiring decisions. The result? Longer hiring cycles and significantly more interviews. What once took two or three conversations can now stretch to six, seven, or even eight rounds.

Another challenge is that not every posted position represents a true external opportunity. At the executive level, companies often have internal candidates in mind but are still required to post the role publicly. For outside candidates, that can mean investing significant time in opportunities that were never likely to be filled externally.

Economic uncertainty is also playing a role. While some industries, such as construction, continue to hire aggressively, sectors like manufacturing, healthcare administration, and finance are moving more deliberately as leaders weigh concerns about interest rates, growth, and broader market conditions.

The good news? Strong opportunities still exist. Understanding how companies are making hiring decisions can help executives adjust their strategy and focus their efforts where they have the greatest chance of success.
