Résumé 101 for Executives Today

You’ve got to view the résumé through a marketing lens. Today’s résumé must contain an executive summary – like the inside jacket cover of a book. It must contain a value proposition, accomplishments with metrics, and 20+ keywords before you even put your experience. The experience should tell a story:  why were you hired?; what did you do to address those needs?; what did you accomplish? Résumé 101

Did you know that today’s résumé has color in appropriate places to lead the reader’s eyes?

A  résumé is no longer enough. You need an interviewing document and a networking document. —Don Weintraub, ExecuNet Managing Director Career Services

Many people want to list all their jobs on their résumé. That’s simply not effective. That approach is appropriate for an entry-level candidate. For executives, only what’s relevant to the job you’re applying for is necessary. Sure, you want to display your impressive experience, but you also don’t want to date yourself or distract from the aspects of your experience that are vital for your desired role. If there is impactful experience that you really want to include, there are ways to group previous career highlights on a résumé, but it’s got to be in a targeted, concise manner.
