Opportunity is Here…Mileage May Vary

Opportunity is here… but don’t just sit there waiting for it to reach out.

You’ve got to knock.

The most promising doors to knock on are in these areas:

top-10-growth-areas-by-industry-may-2017.jpgThe top three have been consistent so far in 2017. Though Technology did bump Healthcare from the top spot, all three industries remain the top areas with executive hiring activity. Noteworthy is Clean/Green Technology’s inclusion on the top 10 industries list. Climbing fast, they were back at number 16 in February.  This time they booted Energy/Utilities out of the top 10 down to number 12.

Just hanging on to top 10 status is Financial Services, which fell from 5 to 9.

Our exclusive Recruiter Confidence shows 60% of recruiters believe the executive job market will improve in the next three months so now is not the time to put on the sandals and sunscreen and head to the pool.

Or is it?

Being in your pool alone in your backyard isn’t going to open doors for you. But those summertime barbeques (and golf outings) are perfect opportunities to network.

So yes, you can spend time at your pool or favorite golf course, just make sure you make these outings networking opportunities. Expand your circle. Invite people you may be able to help. I know you want opportunities to come your way, but the best way to do that is to help others. After you’ve made some deposits into the networking account, it’s much easier to make a withdrawal.

In addition to a positive Recruiter Confidence Index, our Executive Job Creation Index (EJCI) was also looking good. At +22 it’s down from January’s high of +36, but it’s well ahead of the +12 we saw last year at this time. The EJCI measures the number of companies adding jobs versus the number of companies putting a hold on or eliminating jobs.

job-creation-april-2017-chart-lg.jpgOverall, recruiters are optimistic on executive hiring possibilities this summer. The trends show where one is likely to find a greater number of opportunities this summer, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t opportunities outside the top 10. It simply means that’s where the most growth can be found. Remember, it only takes one job, one call, one contact, one offer to begin a whole new chapter in your life.

Our mission is to keep you aware of market trends and intelligence that will help you in your career and in managing talent in your company. We’ll update these perspectives throughout the year, so you’ll continue to be informed. In the meantime, use BBQs and golf outings to connect with new people. Help them achieve their goals. And prepare your own personal brand talking points. Can you share what you’re about – not your most recent job title or employer  – in 30 seconds? How about a two-minute version? You’ve got to have that down… practiced. Do you have a professionally done résumé? Your competition does. Just adding your latest job to the list won’t cut it anymore… hasn’t for awhile now.

The executive job market looks promising. The summer weather is here. It’s a holiday weekend. This is a wonderful time!
