So who are you anyway?
That’s a big question if you really ponder it for awhile. And if you are ever in a job search, you do not want to give a rushed answer – not even to yourself.
The very first thing anyone in search needs to do is know his story. I’m not talking about the jobs and titles you’ve held. You are way beyond that. At the executive level, you need to be able to share your story – a story of value and focus.
You’ve gone past the stage of telling them what they want to hear, of completely reworking your résumé for the job listing. You go into an interview knowing the company’s, better still – the decision maker’s, problem that needs fixing, and you position yourself as the solution who will make it all better.
You don’t say, “I can help. I’ve improved market share before.” Instead, you identify the problem: “You have limited growth in these core areas.” And offer a direction: “I see my contacts with these companies as an avenue to use acquisition as a way into your desired core areas.”
Back to the question. So who are you anyway?
You are the answer – craft your narrative accordingly.
