Admit it: Women are Smarter Than Men

confident-businesswomanA recent article in pointed out that hedge funds run by women make three times as much money as hedge funds run by men, and that companies with female CEOs outperform companies with male CEOs by nearly 50%.

The data is so compelling that, according to The Wall Street Journal, Barclay’s Bank has set up a stock fund that invests in companies with a female CEO or a board of directors that is at least 25% female.

What’s fascinating about this story, though, isn’t the data, but the attempt to “mansplain” it away.

    Great commentary on the Atlantic and WSJ articles. This is a fairly ubiquitous challenge that most organizations still don’t know how to overcome.

    In my experience, organizations don’t intentionally create policies that have an anti-women bias. The biases are usually unconscious and occur during the resume review or interview phases. Read “How to Remove Gender Bias From The Hiring Process.”

    Turn this discussion a tad and we can review the conscious and unconscious bias against people who don’t have “American” names. The net to recent research is that these candidates have 16-20% fewer job interviews than candidates with “White” names.

    Another quarter turn and we have age bias. The same Silicon Valley companies that are loudly touting Diversity and Inclusion still ask, “high school, class end year” on their applications. For example, see the bottom right hand corner of a job application for Facebook.
